May 26 1918: Georgia declares its independence.
February 1921: The Democratic Republic of Georgia is occupied by the Red Army.
1936: Georgia becomes the Soviet Socialist Republic of Georgia.
April 9 1991: Repression against a demonstration in Tbilisi.
That same day: Georgia declares its independence once again.
1991: Zviad Gamsakhourdia is elected President of Georgia.
December 1991: Beginning of the civil war in Georgia.
The President leaves the government.
November 1995: Edouard Amvrosiyevich Chevardnadzé is elected President.
2000: Re-election of Chevardnadzé.
January 2004: Mikhaïl Saakachvili, a pro-western democrat, is elected President with 90% of the votes. The elections take place six weeks after the 'Rose Revolution', which expelled Edouard Chevardnadzé from power.
