Monasteries and old churches are very numerous in Georgia. 11 miles from Tbilisi, the Dzhvari monastery is surrounded by beautiful scenery. You can visit the ones of Daba, Vardzia (600 apartments within the grottos, near Mtskheta) and the one in Zedazeni and its fortress. Not very far from Zugdidi, you will find the Khobi monastery and Nokalakevi fortress (with its cathedrals, ramparts and secret passages). Near Kutaisi, Gelati Monastery is a beautiful medieval architectural treasure.
