Berlin and the surrounding area, Germany

In the land of techno and cycle paths, the city which represents European unification is reinforcing its identity as a vibrant city to rival all others, and with its plethora of all kinds of cafes, Berlin really is bursting with life. The city is becoming increasingly popular among European students participating in the Erasmus study programme and recent graduates looking to take their first step up the career ladder. Its recent history is also the reason behind the variety which characterises the city, a rich combination of rapidly developing districts and older, but no less popular areas, like the former East Berlin, which is now drawing in foreigners, particularly Russians.Berlin is a city full of small shops, cafes charging reasonable prices and bars oozing old-fashioned charm. Some of the most original, modern, colourful and sometimes even waterborne cafes are to be found in Kreuzberg, a haunt of night-owls, which plays host to crowds of both tourists and locals until dawn. Thanks to the many low cost flights available, Berlin is more accessible now than ever before: from England, Ryanair, Easyjet and Air Berlin provide practical and notably cheaper connections than the traditional airlines, making Berlin one of the most popular capital cities for weekend breaks.

  • To see

The Brandenburg Gate is the last standing of the 14 gates which originally defended the town. Built between 1788 and 1791 and modelled on the Propylaea in Athens, the Brandeburger Tor was reserved for German emperors, although Napoleon also passed through it when he attacked Prussia! A symbol of the division between the two parts of the city until the fall of the Wall (and consequent reunification), the Gate is now Berlin's best-known monument.

    To do

If you are a fan of cycling, Berlin will be right up your path! The capital is literally overflowing with cyclists making the most of the city's excellent cycle path system and the protection afforded to cyclists, which includes special traffic lights and preferential lanes, meaning that any ride around the city will be a pleasure.Whilst the many shops on Friedrichstrasse are open every day to cater to the every whim of shopping enthusiasts, you might not have been aware that 20% of the city's area is parkland, perfect for a pleasant afternoon stroll.

    To think about

Germany is well known for giving us some of the greatest philosophers and musicians of our time; from Bach to Beethoven, Nicola Cusano to Max Dessoir, the country has proven to be fertile land for the cultivation of great minds and artistic talents. Indeed, Eduard Bernstein (known for his revision of Marxism), Friedrich Hegel, art historian Henrich Hoto, philosopher Paul Kristeller and many others were all born or died in Berlin. The capital was also very vibrant during the 1930's, and the special love of knowledge developed in its universities still finds expression today in the city's many museums.
  • To avoid

A word of advice: don't set off in search of a particular street without knowing the exact name of the district it's in - as a result of the former East-West split, many of the city's streets share the same names, so you could find yourself on completely the wrong side of the city!

    To try

Just like something out of an old American film, you'll undoubtedly come across the many mobile stands on street corners selling a variety of sausages and wurstels, perfect for satisfying any hungry tourists passing by! Of course, for the full authentic experience, you really should have a good pint of local beer to hand to wash it down with! Heading into the more colourful districts of the capital you'll find an eclectic variety of typical Berlin bistro products, spicy Lebanese specialities and even Asian flavours - a head-spinning array of culinary delights!

    To bring back

The bear is the symbol of Berlin and can be found on a variety of gadgets and souvenirs throughout the city. As the traditional defender of Berlin against the dangers of the East and the West, the bear ('bär' in German) first appeared on the city's coat of arms in the 13th Century, and in 2001, an original design project saw the capital invaded by over seven hundred large bears, created by several different artists and also put on sale, with all profits going to UNESCO.
