Dresden is the third city of the former GDR (German Democratic Republic). Demolished in 1945, the capital of Saxony was rebuilt virtually as it was. Its historic centre, renowned opera, museums (amongst the richest in Germany) and traditional markets make it one of the most visited provinces; the surrounding areas of the city are simply magnificent.
