Along the Baltic coast you will find endless stretches of seaside resorts, all lined with white sand beaches. Rostock is the largest coastal city. Worth seeing are the Gothic churches and cloisters, towers and fortresses, gabled houses and red-brick warehouses lying at the heart of this old university town with its 800-year history. Further eastwards lies the small medieval town of Stralsund, located on a peninsular. From the dyke, you will get to Rügen, the largest island in Germany whose west coast is interspersed with several small creeks. To the east, you will find the renowned chalk cliffs as well as lovely seaside resorts like Binz. Usedom, the second largest island, is made up of marshes, inland lakes, forests, dunes and fine sand beaches forming a highly varied landscape. The Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck resorts rank among the loveliest on the island.
