The Alte Pinakothek The plump and light-hearted works of art in the forecourt soften the serious look of this classical building. Andreas M Gross / age fotostock
Three museums of painting collections form a complete and rich complex. In Munich, the former paintings gallery hosts a collection of works by different European schools from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Constructed between 1826 and 1836, the building initially housed the collections of the Wittelsbachs. The immense Venetian Renaissance building houses a section dedicated to the primitive Germans, as well as Dutch (Rembrandt), Italian (Boticelli, Raphael), French (Nicolas Poussin) and Spanish (Murillo) paintings. Three halls are dedicated to ambulant exhibitions.
