The North Sea with its 186 mile coastline is lined with islands where colonies of seals live. Schleswig-Holstein National Park envelops the archipelago of Halligen (see the Marsh Island of Langaneb) and a good number of islands of Northern Friesland. On Sylt, the largest of the islands, lies an immense beach of fine sand backed by small pink cliffs; Helgoland island hosts lovely cliffs of red sandstone. It holds an aquarium and a bird observatory. Western Friesland boasts 7 islands with splendid beaches of fine sand and dunes.
