Kumasi, Ashanti kingdom's former capital, is the king's current residency and the country's cultural centre. Do not miss the National Cultural Centre. It encompasses the Ashanti History Museum, a library, an excellent handcraft shop and a room for exhibitions. Here you will find the fake golden stool, intended to trick the British who wanted to appropriate the original. They discovered this deceit many years later. The real Stool, a sacred object, is conserved in Manhyia palace and is exposed only for very special events. The Manhyia palace was the residency of Ashanti sovereigns. They lived in a simple environment, and the place is surprisingly modest.
