The Upper Rock Nature Reserve © D. Lefranc-Explorer
Favour exploring the Upper Rock Nature Reserve that covers a large part of the Rock. To get there, you can follow the cable-car departing from Red Sand Road or go along the trail that starts in the Alameda Botanical Gardens. You will rapidly notice the Moorish Castle's dungeon, which is the last vestige of the Muslim fortress built in the 14th century. Then visit Saint Michael's Cave. This cave, decorated with calcareous concretions, has been transformed into an auditorium thanks to its excellent acoustics. Finally, go and see the Upper Galleries; built during the ?Grand Siege' in the late 18th century, it expands over 45 miles, but only the beginning of the galleries is open to the public.
