Not far from Heraklion, the site of Cnossos displays the ruins of a palace built around 1900 BC and destroyed by an earthquake two hundred years later. The second palace was also destroyed, following the eruption of the Santorini volcano and the outbreak of a fire. The site is also home to the Minos Palace, the priests' houses, some modest residents' houses, and cemeteries.
