Greek cooking, very influenced by the former Turkish occupation, is essentially based around olive oil. Amongst the renowned dishes, you will of course find the Greek salad made of tomatoes, cucumber, olives and feta, but also the famous moussaka (minced meat with aubergine topped with bechamel sauce). Dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), are found everywhere. Souvlakis (meat skewers), are delicious and very cheap. Pitas, which are small, flat round bread stuffed with meat, tomatoes and some sauce, are also very reasonable. On the other hand, fish is rare and therefore very expensive.
