Heraklion is the entrance port to Crete, and its numerous lively back-streets are safe and pleasant to visit by night. In the rest of the country, the towns are usually small and located by the sea. They all bear the signs of the Venetian and Ottoman occupation of the island, as well as the importance of the tourism industry in these small seaside resorts.
