Elounda, Crete

Elounda is located 7 and a half miles north of Agios Nikolaos. It can be reached by car on a nice road along the Mirabello Bay. Its small port is surrounded by mountains, offering landscapes that are more pleasant than those of Heraklion. In the hinterland, it overlooks the Gulf of Mirabello and the panoramic view is remarkable.
Off the port, the island of Spinalonga runs from north to south. Until it was discovered that leprosy was not contagious in the 1950s, it was here where they used to isolate lepers. The Venetians built one of the most imposing fortresses on the island of Crete, the last fortress to resist the invading Turks. Elounda is a region also known for its luxury hotels.

  On the island - From the visit of the ruins of the palace of Knossos, to the Minoan ruins of Festos and the palace of Malia, lovers of history will not run out of places to visit.
