Overview

Greek Islands

The Greek Islands no longer have to prove themselves as one of the world's best holiday destinations. The number of tourists who flock there during the summer season just shows how popular they've become! However, bearing in mind that there are over a hundred islands, choosing a place to stay can be quite difficult.

The Greek Islands are a collection of over 6,000 islands and islets. Only 227 of the islands are inhabited, and only 78 of those have more than 100 inhabitants. The largest Greek island is Crete, followed by Euboea, Lesbos and Rhodes. The rest of the islands are about two-thirds of the area of Rhodes, or smaller.

The islands aregrouped into the following clusters: the Argo-Saronic Islands in the Saronic gulf near Athens, the Cyclades, the North Aegean Islands, a loose grouping off the west coast of Turkey, the Dodecanese, between Crete and Turkey, the Sporades, off the coast of Euboea, and the Ionian Islands. There are also many islands, islets and rocks that surround the coast of Crete.

The Cyclades islands are by far the best, followed by Corfu and Rhodes. It is very difficult not to be compelled by the Greek lifestyle: swimming in crystal clear waters, drinking locally made wine, and living in round white houses, surrounded by scenic villages with charming streets and alleys.

pros

  •  There are lots of different islands, which are all successful tourist destinations and very popular for their laid back lifestyles.

cons

  •  The language barrier.
  •  Travelling across the ocean can be unpredictable: departures may be cancelled due to bad weather, strikes or other unexpected events; travel times may also be extended due to additional stops at the last minute. In addition, some of the boats are lacking in comforts.

Our Editorial team's advice

Some holidaymakers try to see several islands within two or three days. This can be manic, so if you are looking to relax and unwind, stick to one or two islands. If you only have a week to spend in the Cyclades, it's best to choose a direct flight without a stop in Athens: you will be able to enjoy one to two days more on the islands. However, a stopover in Athens on your way to the islands can be a good idea if you're interested in visiting the capital's most beautiful ancient sites: the Acropolis with the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Agora, and the Theatre of Herodes Atticus.

Santorini: the pearl of the Mediterranean

To come to Greece and not go to Santorini would be to commit a sin. On approaching its coast, the capital, Fira, cuts an imposing figure from the top of its cliffs. The town is a true maze from one end to the other and is chock-a-block with white-washed houses, blue-domed Orthodox churches and flights of stairs leading onto even more narrow streets. ...
