Between Heraklion and Chania, on the north coast, Rethymno is an important commercial and touristic port. Venetian architecture is very present in the old neighbourhoods of the city, as well as many minarets. Make sure to visit the mosque of Nerantzes, for the beauty of its great doors, and the mosque of Kara Mussa for its architecture. Take a walk around the Venetian fortress, with its lovely view over the port, and learn about the central role it played in the city's history.
