 Shopping

The craftwork has created colonial-style furniture from precious wood. In Pointe-a-Pitre, souvenir shops sell items made of coconut fibre, seashells, embroidery, Madras cloth and the famous "Creole" earrings, big gold rings. It is nicer to buy rum directly in distilleries open to the public, as rates are more advantageous than the ones in supermarkets. Shops open from 8:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m and 14:00 p.m to 17:30 p.m and close on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. On the outskirts of the cities, big shopping centres are open from Monday to Saturday until 20:00 p.m.
