Red flame flowers, beach or hinterland coconut trees and the cursed fig tree are all part of Marie-Galante's plant life. The island is essentially covered with sugar cane. You will also see some Manchineel trees, which is a sort of Carribean quince tree. These trees, toxic from the roots to the leaves, grow close to the beaches and are marked by red paint on their trunks as a warning. During the rainy season, water from its leaves is acidic and burns seriously.
