The main city and economic centre of Guadeloupe, Pointe-à-Pitre is located at the crossroads of these two butterfly-shaped islands. Surrounded by the mangrove at the bottom of a dead-end, it appears at first sight to be a succession of gloomy suburbs and of quite unattractive industrial areas. If it is very animated around Victoire Square, like at the end of mass at the basilica of St.Peter and St.Paul, and at the spice markets for example, there is only a small amount of activity as soon as night falls.
