Saint Francois, Guadelupe

Saint François is the second largest seaside resort on the island after Le Gosier. It was developed in the 1970s, at the far end of the southern coast of Grande-Terre, facing the Atlantic ocean. At the marina : shops, entertainment and tourist restaurants. At the old port : moored fishing boats and small old fashioned wooden huts and roofs made from palm groves where punch is offered and lobster sauce is served at a very reasonable price.
Worth knowing: Saint-François has the only golf course of 18 holes in Guadeloupe, designed by Robert Trent Jones.

pros

  •  The pleasant mixture of a standard "classic tourist seaside resort " and of Creole tradition.
  •  The beautiful public beaches of Salines and Raisins Clairs. The latter, particularly popular amongst the local people of Guadeloupe at the weekend, has beautiful and harmless waves.

cons

  •  The resort's beaches, of a pretty disappointing size and decoration (moderately maintained, loosely arranged), but large public beaches are just a few minutes by car (see "More information"), which are more pleasant but not always better maintained.
