Sugar cane is the alpha and omega of Marie-Galante and is grown all over the island. At the height of its growth, it blocks the view to the countryside by forming high vegetable walls. Its harvest is in January and June when the roads become cluttered up with cow carts transporting their precious canes to the factory. Distilleries start running again, cane straws fly in the air and the smell of freshly-extracted sweet molasses invades the countryside.
