Languages
French is the official language but the entire population speaks Creole.

Requirements
Guadeloupe is a French Overseas Department. For European Union countries and Switzerland, a valid passport is required for stays that do not exceed three months.

Religion
Mostly Catholic (90%), Protestant, and Hindus represent 10% of the population.

Currency
The Euro.
Most international credit cards are accepted everywhere and you can withdraw cash at ATM machines at banks, which open from Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 12.00pm and from 2.30pm to 4.00pm.
Remember, though, that cheques will only be accepted if your bank is located on the island.

Transport
In Pointe-a-Pitre, traffic is chaotic and parking areas pretty rare.
Between 5:00 a.m and 18:00 p.m, buses serve the different towns. Bus schedules are irregular and Guadeloupians often hitch hike rather than waiting for the buses. Thus, it is recommended to rent a car to travel around easily.
Car rental rates are similar to those in Britain. $$ During the peak season, it is recommended to book your car reservation before departure.

Health
No vaccine is required.

Electricity
Voltage is 220 V. An adapter is not needed.

525,000 tourists stayed on the Guadeloupian Islands in 2005.

Taxes
Customs: you are able to bring back no more than 300 cigarettes or 75 cigars and 1 and a half litres of alcohol. Travellers going to the neighbouring islands of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy must keep all their receipts from electronical equipment bought on the territory. The total amount should not exceed ?640 (£510).
The tipping rate is the same as in the UK (10%).
