Located in the north of the country, the Mayan zone is made up of an untouched forest that hosts a wide variety of trees such as the pine, mahogany, cedar, kapok and weeping fig trees. Among the fauna in the jungle, you can find many birds such as parrots and toucans. With a lot of luck, you will catch sight of the kings of the area such as jaguars, pumas, coral snakes, iguanas, tapirs, anteaters and monkeys. It is unfortunate that deforestation makes jaguars, turkeys and even Guatemala's national symbol, the quetzal, flee the area. The Mario Dary reserve is the only place where it is still possible to admire this curious bird.
