9 mi off the coast of the Approuague estuary lies the Grand Connétable Island nature reserve, which consists of two parts, namely Grand Connétable and Petit Connétable. The reserve, which spans over 3 mi, is the only protected marine area on the Amazonian coast and is home to green turtles, hundreds of pairs of seabirds and giant groupers. There is no land access to the island for the general public, mainly so as not to disturb the birds.
