162 miles from Cayenne, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is the country's second largest city. Exceptional colonial buildings, blockhouses, transportation camps where the Butterfly cell, (guards' district) is situated, everything is listed as an historical monument (over 247, 500 sq ft). Be patient for the guided tour, which is highly recommended. While you're waiting for the queues to disperse, visit St. Maurice rum distillery, the last one of its kind in operation, which is located a little over a mile south of the city.
