9 miles off the shore of Kourou is the small archipelago of Salut Islands: Cayenne's prison where 90,000 prisoners were deported in less than a century. A daily shuttle serves Royal Island, the former penitentiary place for common-law prisoners, where the hospital and the chapel still remain. Devil Island, the neighbouring island, was reserved for political convicts, including the famous Dreyfus. In the Salut Islands area, if you like fishing, you will probably be able to catch groupers, tarpons and sharks.
