The Amana Nature Reserve was established in 1998 and spans nearly 37,066 acres in the north-west of Guyana, between the mouths of the Maroni and Organabo rivers. Sea turtles come to this coastal reserve every year to nest, including the largest of them all, the leatherback turtle, weighing in at between 600 and 900kg. The site, which is open to the public, is also home to extremely diverse flora and fauna, from superb birds such as the red ibis and the flamingo to monkeys, jaguars, poisonous snakes and even manatees, among others.
