The Kaw-Roura Marshes Nature Reserve lies to the east of Roura and to the south-east of Cayenne and can only be accessed by river. With an area of 234,750 acres, it is the second largest French nature reserve, and in addition to the magnificent red ibis, its waters are also home to a large number of caimans, particularly of the black South American, red, and spectacled varieties. The village of Kaw, some 32 mi away, and the closest town of Roura are both contained within the reserve itself.
