12th century: the country is partly encompassed in the Mali Empire. 1461: arrival of the Portuguese people and beginning of the slave trade. 1889: Guinea becomes a French colony, before joining French West Africa, and then the French Sudan.
1958: independence with Sékou Touré.
1984: Sékou Touré dies, Lansana Conté becomes the new head of government.
June 1995: pluralistic legislative elections.
February 1996: attempt to destabilise President Conté. December 1998: Conté is re-elected.
