Hi-tech: GoPro HD Hero sports camera

Our selection: High Tech of the week

GoPro HD Hero sports camera

GoPro HD Hero sports camera

If nothing else, the HD Hero camera from Go-Pro is extremely versatile. You can wear it, mount it, take it underwater, down mountains, through snow and it emerges out the other side victorious - there is nothing it can't capture.

The camera comes in four different packs. The HD Hero Naked gets you the camera, a waterproof case, an adhesive mount, and all the necessary cables. The Outdoor, Surf and Motorsports editions are for those wanting a bit more specificity and come with extras (around £80 extra) such as helmet straps, surfboard mounts and floating cases for the optimum footage of your chosen sport.

In terms of working it, once the instructions have been given a quick glance over and then chucked out the back window, it is relatively easy to figure out. The cost (£190 for the HD Hero Naked edition) is pretty good as an entry level price and for the quality of film that the camera produces.

The website claims this camera to be the most used by sporting professionals in the world, and you can see why. Each clip is amazingly jog-free and the wide angle HD video gives you room for error and an extremely professional finish. The battery life is relatively good, but above all, the GoPro is durable. You can literally throw it off a cliff, or down a mountain and it will survive unscathed.

That's not to say it doesn't come without its drawbacks and slight technical problems. The camera itself doesn't have a viewfinder attached (you can buy one for a considerable amount extra) which means it's guess and hope for the best. Though this may not present a huge problem for many, others may struggle with the lack of accuracy. The camera is also quite heavy, presenting small problems for those attaching to helmets and so on. And one more thing - the camera itself doesn't float so if you're intending to use it for water sports, it's well worth investing in the Floaty Backdoor.

However, despite its one or two design flaws, this sport camera really does set the standard for on-the-go sports filming. To give you an idea of just how good, these cameras are used by the likes of the Red Bull team, as well as filmmakers across the globe. A good investment that will have you hooked from the word 'Go'.
