A once in a life time trip around the world, a quick weekend away with friends, the usual family holiday to the south of France...one essential item is needed: a camera. And if you want something to impress your fellow holidaymakers while having a bit of fun yourself, look no further than the Spinner 360 from Lomography.
This handy little gadget is the latest offering from the retro camera-makers and does exactly as the name suggests; it takes a 360 degree panoramic picture of your surroundings. Perfect for that stunning view from a mountain top, bustling city scene from the roof-top of a skyscraper or simply a few familiar faces to put in a photo album.
The camera doesn't take much figuring out at all as it operates just like the old film cameras of old! All it needs is the standard 35mm film, available in just about any camera or developing shop (Boots is a good place to look if you're at a bit of a loss), and you're away.
Rather than pushing a button and waiting for the flash however, this design requires a quick pull on the rip cord found on the camera's handle which, when let go, has the camera head whizzing round 360 degrees in all of half a second (just a quick tip - hold the camera over your head if you don't want a snap of you staring intently into the camera lens, looking slightly nonplussed).
Not the first of its kind by a long way, but certainly an affordable, modern and easy-to-use design that gives a refreshing look at photography (and the art of positioning). For that extra perfect shot, the camera even has a 360 degree spirit level on top to make sure you get the entire panorama in one...though it may take a bit of practice!
Apart from different settings for cloudy and sunny weather, the camera just 'keeps it simple', as is Lomography's constant refrain and the basis for all their cameras. Though not as pocket-able as its shiny digital counterparts, the extra bulk is well worth it, both for the quality and the novelty of the pictures you get from it. Now all that's left to do is to find that perfect view.
