Overview :

This self-drive or escorted holiday adventure presents curious travellers with the best way to discover some of South Africa's most famous landmarks and exciting routes. Travellers on this tour will embark on a unique journey of discovery, taking in the Winelands, doing some whale-watching, going on the Garden Route and admiring the breathtaking views of the mountain scenery as they work their way down to one of the private game reserves in the Eastern Cape, where they will stay for a couple of days and get the chance to see the African Big 5.

This tour comprises 10 Nights exploring the Wonders of Cape Town and the Garden Route plus an Eastern Cape Safari on a Bed & Breakfast and Full Board basis (depending on the different hotels you will be staying at throughout the trip - detailed below) and including 8 days car hire for self-driven excursions and explorations during your leisure time.

TOUR ITINERARY:

Day 1 to 3 - 3 nights in Cape Town staying at the Protea President hotel (on Bed & Breakfast basis)

After arriving in Cape Town in the morning, you will be greeted by representatives at the airport and then transferred to your hotel where you will get to spend the rest of the day at your own leisure. During the first three days of your journey you will be spending your time as you desire, with plenty of free time available for independent sightseeing and strolling around Cape Town on your own.

Suggestions: Spend your leisure time discovering Cape Town, known as the “Mother City”. A perfect opportunity to visit the V&A Waterfront, where you can experience: spectacular views, the buzz of the working harbour, world class restaurants, shopping and so much more. There are various day tours available in Cape Town and we suggest spending one of your free three days by going on the full day Cape Peninsula Tour, where you will be driven along the Atlantic seaboard via Hout Bay, to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and its scenic viewing point. You will then stop at Boulders Beach to see the African penguins, and then travel through the naval port of Simon’s Town. Simon’s Town is situated on False Bay and is rich in history, character and atmosphere.

On Day 2 and 3 - on these two additional days at your own leisure, we suggest you take an optional full day tour to the Cape Winelands. This excursion takes in the tranquillity and beauty of Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands. Throughout this tour you can experience the rich historical and cultural heritage while sampling wines of merit at local well known wine estates. Alternatively, you could take in the sights and sounds of Cape Town on a half day optional Cape Town City Tour. The ultimate ‘Mother City’ experience – designed to orientate you and give you insight into the magic of Cape Town.

3 Nigths Garden Route

Day 4 - Oudsthoorn - staying at The Pearl Hotel (on Bed & Breakfast basis)

Departure from Cape Town today as you head towards "Route 62", one of the most beautiful travel routes in South Africa, as well as one of the least known and least travelled ones. Make your way off the beaten path via Robertson, to Montaque and passing towns like Barrydale and Calitzdorp, a Port Wine producing area.

Arrive in Oudtshoorn, affectionately known as the ‘feather capital’, because of its large ostrich farming industry.  Here you can visit the Ostrich Capital of the world, visit an ostrich farm show and explore the Cango Caves; boasting a labyrinth of massive caverns and intertwining passages. These caves are considered one of the world’s great natural wonders.

Day 5 - Oudtshoorn to Kynsna - Knysna Hollow Boutique Hotel (on Bed & Breakfast basis)

Departing from Oudtshoorn today and heading towards Kynsna. During this part of the journey you  will travel over the scenic Outenique Pass to George, nestled below the Outenique Mountains, and onto the lagoon town of Knsyna. Spend this day exploring Knysna, one of the Southern Cape coast’s best known holiday destinations, situated between lush forests and the shores of a peaceful lagoon.

Day 6 - Knysna - Knysna Hollow Boutique Hotel (on Bed & Breakfast basis)

Knysna offers its visitors many activities and attractions.  The most well known attraction being the ‘Heads’, two great sandstone cliffs guarding the mouth of the lagoon which connects the estuary with the sea. Our suggestion is for you take a ferry boat cruise across the lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve and take a stroll through the forest to enjoy a view of the ‘Heads’.

Just  further along the coastline is the town of Plettenberg Bay and here we suggest you take a tour of Monkeyland, a sanctuary and home to numerous species of monkeys, followed by a tour of Birds of End, the largest free flight walk through aviary in the world.

There are many nearby attractions for you can choose from during your time in Knysna, from bungee jumping (216 metres) off the Bloukrans River Bridge, or enjoying an ecological marine adventure with the opportunity to interact with the whales and dolphins, or just lazing on the beach.

Day 7 - Knysna via Port Elizabeth to Kenton-on-Sea (staying at the Kariega Game Reserve on Full Board basis)

Today, you will travel through the scenic Tsitsikamma Forest, a coastal forested area of immense beauty before heading towards the Kariega Game Reserve, via Port Elizabeth.  Kariega comprises 9000ha of pristine wilderness incorporating the picturesque Kariega and Bushman’s Rivers.  The reserve offers a combination of ‘Big Five’ game viewing and an expansive variety of fauna, flora and bird life in a landscape that spans across 5 different ecosystems, offering the most dramatic views. The result is very striking and truly unique to Kariega. In the afternoon you will enjoy an open vehicle safari, before returning after sunset to a wonderful dinner at the reserve.

Day 8 to 9 - Two Nights at the Kariega Game Reserve (on Full Board basis)

Enjoy early morning and afternoon game drives in an open safari vehicle, with an excellent chance of seeing the ‘Big Five’. In addition to unforgettable game viewing from open safari vehicles with qualified rangers, the Kariega experience is unique in its offering of safe walking tours and a great diversity of activities which include river cruises, canoeing, fishing, a spa and gym and visits to the nearby beaches (on guests' own time).

Guests are based in the main lodge on arrival depending upon the time game drive takes place in the afternoon. There will be two game drives each day on days 8 and 9 and a morning game drive on day 10.

Day 10 -  Depart from Kariega Game Reserve towards  Mossell Bay  ( staying Mossel Bay Lodge on Bed & Breakfast basis)

This morning starts off with an early travelling journey towards Mossel Bay, which is situated halfway between Kariega  and  Cape Town. Mossel Bay is a bustling holiday town and port, set on the sun-washed slopes of Cape St Blaize, overlooking the expansive bay, against the blue black backdrop of the Outeniqua Mountains. Of real interest here is  whale watching and  the very first Post Office in South Africa was at Mossel Bay in 1500, when a man named Pedro de Ataide left a letter in a shoe under a milkwood tree. Today the ancient Post Office is a national monument and mail is still sorted here.

Day 11 - Depart Mossel Bay to Cape Town and onwards journey home to the UK

Today you will get the chance to enjoy and take in the changing passing canvas as you make your way back to Cape Town International Airport, via the scenic Sir Lowry’s Pass, which provides spectacular views of the Cape Peninsula, arriving at the airport in time for your return flight.
