The forest of skyscrapers changes from dusk till dawn and provides a real show for visitors never having been to Hong Kong before as the contrasts are stark. In the crowded Chinese streets nestled at the bottom of these giant buildings is an incredible mix of sounds, aromas, colours and people, providing a truly magical atmosphere. Hong Kong Island is still distinctly marked by the British colonial era. Each area of the city has its own unique characteristics - Central Hong Kong with its business spirit, the more traditional Sheung Wan, Causeway Bay centre for shopping, Mongkok or Yaumatei and their countless crowds, Mid Levels, more residential, Lan Kwai Fong, frequented by gweilos (litterally the "ghosts", which are the White foreigners) and Wanchai for a vibrant night life.
