CharmThe charming Mercure Arthur Frommer, far from urban bustle, is located in old weaver houses. It is a shame that the rooms are not better fitted out and equipped because prices are a littlle bit high for the services offered.
The Mercure is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood in the south of the city, at a 10 minute walk from the city centre and 20 minutes from the station.
In front of the hotel, some parking spots are available for free, which is exceptional in Amsterdam, a city where parking is extremely expensive. Arrive early if you want to enjoy it because first come first served.
Hidden in the small courtyard of a quiet and flowery street, the Mercure, although discreet, is charming. Checkerboard tiled floor, beamed ceilings, a few smooth sofas, reception area decorated in wood, the decor recreates a past atmosphere but with a touch of modernity. In the basement there is a bar and restaurant and upstairs, 90 rooms.
90 rooms with limited comfort. Of course television, mini-bar, safe and Internet connection are available but the decor and the fitting out are disappointing. Old dark wood furniture, plastered walls of pale yellow and an orange bedspreads do not give true identity to the room. The very simple bathrooms gather in a small space a shower, a washbasin and toilet, plus essential oils-based beauty products. A real happiness when waking up. Nevertheless, mistrust the hair dryers which burn hands.
In the basement, in a large room with wooden classical decor, old colors and lamps, breakfast is served buffet-style. Few options are available but you can still order scrambled eggs and bacon. ?15 (£12) this is a little expensive for what it is but you are in Amsterdam! Just beside this room, the bar. Open at night, it welcomes clientele of all ages.
