FamilyThe Mövenpick is suitable for families who want to stay in a hotel with high-end facilities. Athletes and couples will also find facilities tailored to their expectations. However, it has no charm: its architecture, quite original, is inspired by the old sugar factories.
This hotel review is a translation from the French, published on our French site, Easyvoyage.com.
The hotel is located on the seafront, 1.5 mile away from the village of Bel Ombre. The airport is 18 miles away. It takes about 1 hour to make the transfer to the hotel.
The Mövenpick is an advisable place to stay for those who want to spend a stay without getting bored at the seaside resort. Various activities are offered, such as dance classes, pottery workshop, water aerobics and stretching. It is not a simple hotel-club so far. No noisy activity during the day, peace for everyone is ensured and the participation to scheduled activities is at the initiative of customers.
The hotel will be good for families looking for rooms with a separate space for children and a mini-club welcoming the youngest continuously from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. ( extra charge for meals to be paid on the spot for children over 6 years ). But the couples will not be disturbed so far, especially if they stay in the "colonial house", a part of the hotel housing the club lodgings and the suites. It is located on one side of the field, on the seafront.
The Mövenpick opened under that name in November 2005. Its architecture, taking inspiration on the old sugar factories, has nothing to do with the rest of the hotel industry in Mauritius. The main restaurant, for example, is located in a vault of lava stone having quite an austere look, especially since the terrace is overlooking a decorative black pond . However, the lovers of space and perspective will appreciate the dimensions of the lobby, a long white corridor open to the outside and extended by a gallery of shops selling luxury stuff. Being also very spacious, the main swimming pool stretching over 1000 m² is located on the seafront and is surrounded by lawns and a sun lounge. A bonus for clients staying at the "colonial house" : they have access to another swimming pool which is private and stretches over 300 m².
The hotel's 181 rooms are divided into 3 main categories : rooms, clubs and suites. Among the rooms, 58 are equipped to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children. The space for children is a true room, separate from that of adults. A noticeable advantage. As for the surface, there is plenty of space, even in double rooms ( 55 m² ). A terrace is offered on the ground floor and a balcony on the upper floor, with in both cases wood and rattan furniture. According to the orientation, the view overlooks the lagoon or the hills at the rear. If you want to make sure that you have a sea view, book a club lodging or a suite in the "colonial house". The bathroom has in addition a round bathtub with massaging jets and an outside shower. As for the decoration, the style recalls that of the IndiaCompany. All the amenities of a hotel with high-end service are there : air conditioning, a minibar, a tea / coffee kit, telephone, television, a hair dryer, bathrobes and personal skin care products are made available in the bathroom.
The main restaurant, which extends onto a terrace, is a bit remote from the lagoon, so you would prefer the restaurant located near the swimming pool, open every day at noon and five times a week in the evening. The atmosphere is both stylish and relaxed, with the beach a few steps away. The plates are presented with some refinement, the bread is prepared on the spot and the pizzas are cooked on a wood fire. It is a pity, however, that the cuisine ( with hints of Mauritian and Mediterranean cuisine ) is a little fatty. The "colonial house" has its own gastronomic restaurant. Breakfast is served buffet style. Buffets are also served in the evening at the main restaurant ( 4 times a week, including one gala night ).
Stretching over 500 metres in length and 20 metres in width, the beach is very well fitted out with wooden deckchairs, canvas sunshades, mattresses and towels . Some corals and rocks protrude in the water, but they are clearly visible, it is not necessary to wear sandals. Attention, the area is exposed to the wind. A water sports club allows you to practice freely snorkeling, water skiing, windsurfing, pedalo, kayaking. However, game fishing, parasailing and diving are available against a fee.
