CharmComfort, peace, various amenities, atmosphere and service: the Bellmare offers all that. But with an aspect a bit imposing and a very large surface where there is not always charm to be found.
This hotel review is a translation from the French, published on our French site, Easyvoyage.com.
It is located on the oceanfront, 6.2 miles away from Flacq. To reach the hotel from the airport ( located 34 miles away), you will need a 1 hour drive.
Well-known place for golf players ( the Maurice Open takes place here every year in December), the Belle Mare Plage is a luxury establishment that allows you to stay in spacious rooms ( or villas) being offered amenities for kids ( mini-club) and adults ( spa, land and water sports). The very large beach is one of the numerous assets of the hotel. However, the domain is big : you will walk a lot if you want to see all the aspects of the Belle Mare. Or you use one of the mobility scooters that ride through the domain.
The Belle Mare Plage was renovated and expanded in 2002. Its architecture with an imposing lobby reminds of the old Mauritian roots ( Europe, Africa and Asia). Rattan furniture, small tables with black marble top, a visible exotic wooden structure supported by columns and white dividing walls with simple shapes. Lots of decorative wooden elements furnish the place without overloading it. Facing the entrance, there are two stairway pools with grey-green tiling that contrasts wit the turquoise color of the near by lagoon. A few small vegetation islets in the second pool, from where emerge thin coconut tree trunks, don't really create a convincing impression. But other leisure areas fitted out around two 20 to 30 m long swimming pools and a semi-submarine solarium reserve peace and a pleasant view of the gardens and the lagoon. All the relaxation equipment is provided, towels included.
The hotel includes 235 rooms spread out in several categories and 20 villas. The villas represent the ultimate accommodation at the Belle Mare. With a private reception, they offer a very large surface( from 375 to 525 mē ) spread out in lots of rooms, a lounge area where you can eat and a sundeck with garden. Three of them that overlook the beach have also a swimming pool. The other rooms are divided into ''prestige'' ( 3 persons) sea view, ''junior suite'' ( 3 persons) sea and garden or sea front view and ''deluxe suite'' ( 4 persons) sea view. All the rooms are located in units of maximum 3 levels. Their surface is of at least 45 mē. The layout is of colonial inspiration. The bathroom opens on the room through a window equipped with a wooden stave blind. The balcony or the sundeck also offer a wooden garden lounge. All the amenities of a luxury hotel are provided : shower, bathtub, hair-dryer, bathrobes and welcome products in the bathroom; air-conditioning, fan, telephone, TV and mini-bar in the room.
7 different restaurants are available for meals. Breakfast is served at the main restaurant La Citronelle. Full buffet set up in a room fitted out with stone and wood, extended by a crank ( covered sundeck) on the sea front. For lunch, there are two a la carte options at the edge of the pool : Mediterranean cuisine at the Kase, fish specialities at the Indigo. The golf players will have lunch on the green, at the Swing or at the Deer Hunter, with a Creole cuisine. The elegant restaurant Spiaggia on the oceanfront offers refined, Creole and Mediterranean dishes. In the evening, buffet at the main restaurant, a la carte dinner at the Spiagga or at the Deer Hunter. The gourmets will also try the gastronomic restaurant The Blue Penny ( that bears its name from the first stamp issued by the Mauritian Post Office). Perfect French inspired cuisine.
The beach of the Belle Mare, fitted out with fine sand, stretches out on 1.2 mile in length by 100 m in width, facing an almost translucent lagoon. You have then all the space in the world for sunbathing and swimming. A few coconut trees and cane straw huts create an opportune shade. A reserved area is designed for the clients of the villas. A beach service is assured by a flag set on each deckchair. The sportsmen will be able to practice free nautical ski, sailing, windsurfing, kayak and pedal boat. A glass-bottomed boat is also included. On the other hand, diving, game fishing and sea tours require an extra charge.
