CharmThis 2 star hotel certainly hides a few surprises. In fact, its facilities are more along the lines of what you would expect of a 4 star establishment, and once you figure this out you're sure to be delighted. The Sands Beach Resort is the ideal destination for families with children, who need lots of space and entertainment. All of the facilities here are high quality and the hotel offers good value for money.
The Sands Beach Resort is just a 10 minute walk from the centre of the village of Costa Teguise and some 25 mi from Lanzarote international airport. The hotel does not offer direct access to the sea but it does have a lagoon complete with a fine sandy beach. If you're not scared of the rocks, you could always pop down to the small cove that is accessible from the hotel.
The hotel attracts a primarily British clientele, consisting largely of families. The activities will delight sports enthusiasts, as a wide range of sporting activities are on offer.
The hotel is designed in the style of a little village, with each guest room housed in an all-white bungalow featuring typical island architecture that blends in perfectly with that of the Costa Teguise. Despite the fact that there are 368 guest rooms with a total capacity of up to 1,050 people, the architects still managed to create welcoming surroundings that never get too crowded, even during high season. The little village is divided into 6 areas, each with its own pool and encircling a central square where the entertainment takes place; the reason why the area is so large. Rest assured though, you won't have to cross the whole complex to get to where you need to go. On entering the lounge area, the luxury of the decor feels more akin to a 4 star hotel than a 2 star hotel, not least because of the marble stairs adorning the room. To the right lie the bar, the disco (which can accommodate up to 600 people), and the entertainment room. If you'd like to enjoy a show without having to keep an eye on the children, there is a games room just next door equipped with all their favourite games. If you're the type of holidaymaker who likes to keep active, you might be pleased to know the hotel does have a gym that is a bit narrow but well equipped, as well as a tennis court. There is also a freshwater lagoon where you can enjoy a dip or try your hand at windsurfing without worrying about your safety. If you fancy taking a stroll into the village of Costa Teguise, you just have to walk along the seafront (directly accessible from the hotel). The walk will take just 15 minutes and the path is a very pleasant one, as it runs along the ocean.
The accommodation units on offer here are more like apartments than conventional hotel rooms and the facilities that come with them are also impressive. For a start, each apartment has its own little garden where you can relax in a hammock as you admire the view of the pool. Then there is the comfortable and tastefully-decorated kitchen-lounge area, which makes for very welcoming surroundings thanks to its warm colour scheme and wooden furniture. The kitchen is fully equipped and perfect for a family with children. The sofa in the lounge area can be turned into an additional bed. The double bedroom is rather large and is located next to the bathroom, which, for its part, features rather outdated decor but is nevertheless impeccable and equipped with a hair dryer, bathrobes, and a beauty kit. This place certainly seems to meet all the requirements for appealing to couples with younger children.
When it comes to dining, the hotel offers 2 choices. The first is the Restaurant La Hacienda, which serves an impressive buffet in a fully renovated old traditional manor. It's worth a visit for the surroundings but in terms of the cuisine you'll find the quality of the typical dishes served as a buffet could be better. If the rather formal restaurant isn't really your kind of thing, you could always try the selection of light dishes available in the restaurant at the poolside bar, the El Mai Tai. This is generally the more popular option among families since the El Mai Tai offers a special children's menu.
