Located on the verge of the sea, between Estepona and Marbella, the Las Dunas is a luxury small establishment, inspired from the great Spanish haciendas. Its restaurant is one of the best in the Costa del Sol.
The hotel is located on the verge of the sea, between Estepona (5 miles) and Marbella (11 miles), a little less than one hour from Malaga airport (42 miles).
The Las Dunas Beach Hotel and Spa likes to pamper its clients. In fact, it offers a Spa centre including a fitness room, a small indoor pool and a jacuzzi. Here you can have all kinds of treatments: make up, special program lasting several days, and different massages. A private clinic also offers traditional and alternate therapies. For golf lovers, the hotel negociated special rates for most of the courses in the area.
A luxury establishment, member of the '' Leading Hotels of the World'', the Las Dunas hotel opened in 1996 and preserves its class due to a permanent maintenance. It has 73 rooms and 34 appartments, the latter being located in a different building, along the main road. The whole hotel is conceived as a Spanish hacienda, structured around a charming central yard. Covered with a cupola, the lobby preserves the same Mediterranean spirit- green plants, a fountain and country-style frescos. The lobby is connected to the rooms and to the Gauguin living-room through corridors, including one that offers temporary expositions (Miro in 2001). They are fitted out with large picture windows offering a gorgeous view of the sea. The outside space is also groomed- a shadowed terrace and a nice fountain from where a canal decorated with azulejos goes out. It opens onto a 4,300 square feet pool with the sea in the background. It is surrounded by large lawns, with deckchairs, sunshades and palm trees spread out all over the place. The pool is supervised.
The standard rooms are large (470 square feet) and comfortable with their heavy carpet. The decoration is very sober; with all tones of beige. The amenities include air-conditioning, satellite TV , a telephone with direct line for international calls and an Internet/ fax outlet, a safe and a filled mini-bar. The bathrooms are gorgeous with their azulejos. They offer 2 washbasins, a bathtub, a hair-dryer, a telephone and a make-up mirror. A small aside room offers a bidet and a toilet. Welcome products, bathrobe and slippers are available upon arrival. All rooms have a balcony or a terrace overlooking the sea or the gardens. 24-hour room service.
The main restaurant of the Las Dunas, the Lido, is the only 3 star Michelin restaurant in Costa del Sol. The chef is Heinz Winkler himself, the owner of the Heinz Winkler Residence in Aschau, Germany. Its ''Vital Mediterranen'' cuisine have been rewarded by the International Academy of Gastronomy Award. This octogonal dining-room, covered with a cupola, is fitted out with large windows and a terrace overlooking the sea. When the weather is nice, you can see Gibraltar and the Morrocan coasts in the distance. In the evening, a nice crystal chandelier lights up the trompe l'oeil paintings. Expect to spend about ?50 (£40) for an "à la carte" dinner, not including the wine that you can choose between French, Spanish and Italian grands crus (an average of ?70 or £55 per bottle). Amateurs , will also find a good selection of cigars. For lunch, a somptuous Mediterranean buffet is offered at the beach-club. There is a large choice and quality products, like homemade pastries for instance. The Bistro Felix, open from 11.00am to 12.00am offers Eurasian cuisine. It becomes a piano-bar from 8.00pm to 3.00am. The decoration is very eclectic: colorful piano, decorated by the notorius architect Udo Ulrich, Murano lamps, flamenco marbles, African wood, cabinetwork pieces... You can also have dinner under the orange trees in the entrance yard.
The hotel offers a privileged setting on the seashore, with the beach located in the extension of the garden. The setting is however, deceiving. In fact, the beach is just a thin strip of sand scattered with pebbles and bordered by high talus. For the comfort of its clients, the hotel offers an overhang solarium equipped with fourty teak deckchairs(free). The service is assured on the spot. As for the facilities and water sports, you should go a little further away to enjoy the beach-club (paying activities), open from April to October. At last, we have to make you aware that on this place, the beach is not supervised.
