A residential hotel located on the seaside outside of Funchal, the Atlantic Gardens offers spacious, well equipped apartments for long vacations. A wise choice if you like independent vacations.
On the coast, southeast of Madeira, 2 miles away from Funchal and 15 miles away from the airport. Allow15 minutes ride to get downtown and 30 minutes to reach the airport.
Belonging to the Pestana group, the Atlantic Gardens hotel residence is located right beside the Atlantic Bay hotel. It is located on the seafront but does not have direct access to the beach. If you want to get to the pebbled beach located down below, you have to pass through the Atlantic Bay hotel. This beach is not equipped and swimming is only recommended when the weather is calm. It is necessary to wear plastic beach sandals. You should also be aware that the Atlantic Gardens is located near the Shell processing station in the western side. The biggest inconvenience of this neighbourhood is definitely aesthetic, although the risk of pollution is strictly controlled.
Even if the Atlantic Gardens offers a restaurant serving breakfast and dinner and a snack bar to eat for lunch, some of the the rooms have kitchenettes ( all the apartments have one ) to allow you to show your culinary talents. They will have the same possibility to avoid go shopping by using the ''market list'' service: perfect to order products for immediate use ( milk, yoghurt, coffee, cereals, small breads, water, soda and wine).
If you want to go to downtown Funchal, a free shuttle runs every day except on Sunday ( every hour from 9 am to 7 pm).
Like the nearby Atlantic Bay, the Atlantic Gardens is a modern building which opened in 1991 and was renovated in 1999. Relatively spacious, the lobby is welcoming - yellow wooden reception area, rattan furniture and fabrics in bright prints. The lobby opens towards a solarium covered by synthetic carpet that surrounds a swimming pool of 150 m². A larger surface would have been appreciated, with a larger space devoted to kids. If you want to swim peacefuly, you had better come here early in the morning. The rest of the day, you can relax on the plastic deckchairs, and remember that lying in the shade is not free: a sunshade costs 2.5 euros per day. However, the hotel residence does have an outdoors jacuzzi and a sauna: these two facilities can be used as much as you want.
Of the 110 apartments that the Atlantic Gardens offers, only 55 are available for reservation. The others are private time-share properties. 51 apartments have a surface area of 80 m² and can each accommodate up to 4 persons. The other 4, definitely more spacious, have a maximum capacity of 6 people. All are equipped with a kitchenette offering hotplates, a refrigerator, a toaster, a hood, a kettle and tableware. There is a large lounge area, as well as a sundeck with a table, chairs and plastic deckchairs that overlooks the sea. Simple but nice, the furniture in the apartments is made of rattan. Direct telephone lines and satellite TV are provided. The spacious bathrooms have a bathtub, hair dryer, and welcome products.
The restaurant that overlooks the swimming pool is open for breakfast and dinner. Bright and pleasantly furnished in rattan, it becomes very noisy when the maximum capacity is reached. In the morning, you can choose from a selection of small breads, cereals, cooked meats, cheese and pastries. In the evening, there is a buffet that offers Portuguese dishes once a week. This is an occasion to taste caldo verde (soup) specialities, grilled sardines and beef étouffée. A fixed menu is offered on other days. The recipes are simple and focus on salads, pasta, meat and sauces and vegetables gratins. At noon, a snack-bar near the swimming pool allow you to simply eat a sandwich or a toasted ham and cheese sandwich. As for prices, allow around 20 euros for a complete meal.
