CharmThe Janelas Verdes is a charming little hotel in a quiet district, perfect if you are looking for peace and quiet and a cosy place to stay. Indeed, it is the type of place where you can read a good book curled up next to the fireplace or out on the flower-filled patio when the weather's nice. Whether you come here on your own or as a couple, the place makes you feel like a writer seeking inspiration!
The Janelas Verdes hotel is located on a quiet little street in the residential district of Lapa. The docks area, with its restaurants, bars and trendy shops, is just a few minutes away. Although the National Museum of Antique Art is near by, the hotel is some way from the city centre.
Before becoming the Janelas Verdes hotel, this residence was an annex of the hotel opposite, York House.
This small 3-floor palace dates back to the 18th century. Some say that the famous Portuguese writer Eça de Queiros lived in this house and found inspiration here... The tiny lobby gives onto the salon, where comfy sofas, a fire-place, a piano, an old chests of drawers, a Balinese statue and various magazines await. The interior decor combines colonial objects from Asia with touches of the antique. The small garden patio here is ideal for enjoying your breakfast, having a drink or reading a book; the fountain and flowers are also conducive to relaxation. On the top floor, a small library area with a terrace and a view over the Tagus river welcomes you into a very cosy setting. The leather armchairs, fire-place and souvenirs from around the world bring to mind the study of a seasoned travel writer. There is also a telescope to admire the sky, come nightfall.
The hotel is split into two different parts. The modern part contains 12 rooms, and the old part contains 17 rooms, some of which give onto the garden, others of which overlook the street. The rooms in the old part are smaller but just as welcoming, and the decor is sober but effective; a pale colour scheme (white and beige) dominates. All the rooms are provided with a television, a telephone, air-conditioning and a DVD player. A small detail: the bottle of Port is there to be tasted, in moderation! As for the bathrooms, they offer a modern level of comfort and include antique tap fixtures, a bathtub, a hair-dryer, hospitality products and dressing gowns.
The Janelas Verdes does not have a restaurant, but breakfast is served in the morning in a room cosily furnished with a chimney, comfy sofas and other decorative features. You can also take breakfast on the outdoor terrace (adorned with fountains and mosaic-tiled tables). Fresh orange juice, tea, coffee, cereals, bread, ham, cheese, yoghurt and home-made cakes are all served up here.
