Located at the very heart of the Fenals hotel district in Lloret de Mar, one of the liveliest and most popular seaside resorts of the Costa Brava, the Aquarium is proud of its 4 stars and its astonishing architecture! The building is shaped like the hull of a boat. This establishment is ideal for couples and families with children, and offers a good level of service, great entertainment and perfectly decent food. It is just a shame the beach is more than 500 m away.
The Aquarium hotel is in the Fenals district, which is neither very close to the city centre (approximately 600 m) nor to the beach (500 m) of Lloret de Mar. Barcelona's airport is 43 mi away and Gerona's is 25 mi away.
The beach is more than 500 m away. There are many shops, bars and restaurants located nearby. The town's bus lines run past the hotel regularly and will take you into the centre for a very small price. In the summer, the evenings at Lloret de Mar are... very hot, in every respect. Popular among young Europeans who've come to party, the city can get quite noisy and stay that way until late into the night.
The Aquarium was built in 1986 and partially renovated in 2006. It is tucked away among bigger buildings, meaning its guests do not benefit from a clear view, not even from the top floor. However, there's no chance that you won't be able to find it when you are first arriving at the hotel as it stands out for its architecture: the entrance of the establishment looks like the hull of a boat. The lobby is spacious and open, and boasts soft colours and a floor with light-coloured tiling. There is a small fountain in the entrance for an added touch of freshness. A bar is also located in the entrance hall area.
There are two outdoor swimming pools. One is open and surrounded by deck chairs (and an insufficient number of sunshades!) and the second is covered by a transparent plastic roof structure. The latter is heated in winter. Children have their own pool, a games area and a kids club, open in the summer from 10.00am to 6.00pm. Parents can enjoy the fitness centre, splash about in the jacuzzi, sweat away in the sauna or the Turkish baths, or doze off in the relaxation area. The fitness centre is small but well kept and modern (it was built in 2008). Massages and treatments can be provided upon request, but these come at an extra cost.
The 240 rooms, spread out over four floors, are accessible via two panoramic lifts. The rooms all boast the same decor, which is rather basic and nondescript: yellow and white rooms, light-wood furniture, blue and yellow bedspreads, white tiling. If you have a room that looks out onto the street, you risk having your view obstructed by the rather imposing hotel on the other side of the street (the Oasis Park). The rooms are clean and well equipped with a (tiny) satellite TV, direct international phone line, individual air conditioning, a safe (for a fee), a mini fridge (for a fee), and a balcony with a plastic table and chairs. The bathroom includes a bathtub, a hair dryer, toilets and some welcome toiletries. Room service is available during the day.
In addition to the hotel's two bars, located respectively in the entrance and next to the pool, there is only one restaurant, serving all three meals in the form of a buffet. The quality of the food is nothing special (standard), with both international cuisine and the odd local dish. However, there is a relatively wide variety of dishes to choose from and the layout of the tables is such that you don't have to listen to your neighbours' conversations.
The public beach of Lloret de Mar is just like the city in the summer: crowded and flooded with young Europeans looking to party. If you enjoy the thought of sipping on fluorescent two meter high cocktails in a decadent setting, or playing a game of beach-volley with perfect strangers, this is the place for you. If not, you risk becoming bored quickly... The sand is imported and therefore rather coarse. One advantage of this is that you won't have as many creepy-crawlies as you'd find in "real" sand. The sea is beautiful, clear and calm: a real treat.
