NatureThe Luostotunturi is a large, family-run hotel in a tiny remote village. It is the ideal base for walking, skiing (a bit), and then relaxing in the sauna and swimming pool for the evening before heading to the bar or nightclub without having to go back out into the cold. At the end of the night, you can return to the comfort of your room, where all the necessary amenities await you.
The hotel is located in the middle of Luostro, a village of 70 inhabitants in the northern part of Finnish Lapland, 81 mi from Rovaniemi, which is an hour and a half away by car.
All of the rooms contain two single beds.
The style of this imposing hotel is somewhere between modern and authentic, and its communal areas are full of contrasting decorative features. This comes as no surprise when you learn that the hotel opened in 2000, but a new wing with 26 rooms and small lounges on every floor opened in 2007. The decor here is much more modern, with designer furniture and a more subdued and stylish colour scheme. However, in addition to these small lounges, which are perfect for a family game of cards, all the communal spaces, from the bar and restaurant to the saunas and swimming pool, date back to 2000. The decor is a little outdated but the mountain atmosphere and comfort are top-notch. The swimming pool, for example, is better suited to relaxation than swimming lengths, thanks to the massaging jets of water from the jacuzzi in one section of the pool. Two mixed saunas are also open to guests from 10:00am to 8:00pm. Finally, if you wish to work out, there is a large gym in the basement, complete with numerous machines and even a punch-bag to help get any stress out of your system.
What better way to relax after your exertions and avoid aching muscles than a massage in one of the 3 massage and treatment rooms. There is also a hydro-massage bath with aromatic oils. You can even cut corners with your tan in the UV room, where a 20-minute session will set you back ?6.
Finally, you can be sure of a lively time among people of all ages in the only nightclub in the village, with pride of place going to karaoke! It is open every evening in the high season, and on Fridays and Saturdays during the rest of the year.
There are two types of room. As far as the decor is concerned, the new modern rooms have contemporary dark wooden furniture, a subdued, stylish colour scheme, original dark tiling and a round shower cubicle in the bathroom. The older rooms, however, have a fitted carpet, brightly-coloured bed spreads and curtains and pale pine-style wood furniture. All rooms have the same equipment though, including soap and shampoo dispensers and a hair-dryer in the bathroom, with a television, a telephone, a desk and a minibar in the room itself. 15 of the 100 rooms are perfect for families, because they include a mezzanine space with 3 extra single beds. Finally, there are 15 apartments which are perfect for guests who want a bit more space and privacy with their family. They have one or two separate bedrooms, a kitchen with a dishwasher, oven and hot plates, a lounge with a sofa-bed and a bathroom with a sauna.
The very standard breakfast and dinner (salads, soup, two main dishes and a dessert) are served as a buffet in a large dining room, whose only attractive feature is its bright colours. The cuisine is basic and holds no surprises. It is perfect for sporty types though who wish to eat copious amounts of healthy food. The snack bar next to the reception prepares hamburgers, pizzas, sandwiches, salads, steaks and cakes for lunch and dinner, and at other times in case you are feeling peckish.
