Our pickThe Olonana is one of those hotels where you would love to spend a romantic holiday! This elegant and luxurious camp is a beautiful place to spend a peaceful holiday. This comfortably sized hotel will make you feel at home. Honeymooners, keep this place in mind!
The camp is approximately 250 mi from Nairobi. Although it may seem close enough to you, it takes about six hours to drive there. 150 mi by road, then 70 mi on a mud track, and the rest through the reserve, it is not the easiest trip ever! The flight, however, takes only 35 minutes. The aerodrome is not far from the camp. It actually neighbours the Kichwa Tembo Camp.
The Olonana organises various excursions: safaris with a guide, meals out in the bush and visits to Masai villages. The camp can also organise, with an exterior company, a hot air balloon flight over the reserve.
If you love massages, note that the hotel offers several different treatments. The hotel's spa opened in August 2008.
Protected by an electric fence, the Olonana is a camp surrounded by vegetation. Open since 2000, the hotel still looks brand new. You meet the small hotel reception after having walked across a small garden. All the communal areas are in the same place, along the Mara River. Inside, the restaurant and lounge face each other, and a beautiful library is adjacent to them. There is a beautiful wooden terrace, which means that you can take your meals outside, or simply admire the landscape.
In a peaceful area of the garden lies a small swimming pool surrounded by vegetation. The pool is not very large but there is enough room for you to cool down. This is a good opportunity to take a little nap in the shade. You can laze on one of the comfortable deckchairs and be sung to sleep by the birds all around you.
Originally consisting of 12 tents, the Olonana added two extra tents in 2007. The 14 tents are scattered around the estate, but well isolated from one another. The noise made by your neighbours should not be a problem. Unlike a lot of camps in Masai Mara, the Olonana uses solar energy. This allows it to have electricity all day long. You will not have to put up with unexpected power cuts. The "ancient" tents are all decorated in the same way (with different colours). They visibly exude elegance and comfort. There is no room service here, but a maitre d' is entirely at your service... The rooms are very spacious, they are fitted with parquet flooring and two double four-poster queen-size beds with a mosquito net. The soft lighting, African fabrics and orange bedspreads create a beautiful effect in the rooms. Outside, the huge terrace is a good spot to enjoy the view of the Mara River. As for the bathroom, it is also quite big and built from stone. It is separated from the bedroom by a white curtain. A beautiful double sink allows everyone to have their own space. There are hospitality products and mineral water. The two more "recent" tents are designed in the same way, but they have an outdoor shower as well. The terrace is also equipped with a large sofa.
The only restaurant of the camp looks more like a dining room. The atmosphere is guaranteed to be quiet and convivial. You can have your meal indoors, or out on the terrace, alongside the Mara River. The restaurant is à la carte and serves a wide choice of dishes, which frequently change. The cuisine is international, but the chef can also prepare local specialities on request. The decoration consists of the most beautiful handicraft. Weather permitting, the hotel also organises dinners on the estate.
