RestA member of the « Leading Hotels of the World », the Serena is one of Nairobi's most comfortable hotels. Located close to the airport, it is easily accessible for people with a stopover in the Kenyan capital, and, why not, for a few more days... The quality of the service reflects perfectly the hospitality of the country and the elegance of the place makes it a top hotel.
The Nairobi Serena is a mere 15 minute drive from the airport. Beware of the traffic, however, which can sometimes be extremely busy. The ride into the city centre is only three extra mi.
There are no facilities for children here. It is possible, however, to get a baby-sitter for parents who wish to spend a romantic evening together.
Surrounded by a lush tropical garden, the Nairobi Serena offers a beautiful view over Nairobi Central Park as well as of the city centre's sky-scrapers. Although the hotel is surrounded by roads, it is fairly quiet and an evening spent in the garden is most pleasant.
When you step into the lobby, you will see a softly lit, rectangular reception of reasonable size. It is all quite dark but gives it an intimate atmosphere. The reception is on the left-hand side of the entrance door, fitted into the wall. The staff are friendly enough, although a little smile would make it better... A little further down, several lounge areas are laid out on a raised platform. Internet addicts can be reassured, it is possible to use the Wifi. The interior decoration is a kaleidoscope of various African cultures. You will see a mixture of objects coming from several countries of the African continent.
The outdoor swimming pool lies opposite the main restaurant. Its rounded shapes are quite pleasant and give the whole thing a beautiful aspect. Wooden deckchairs are laid out all around it. A small bar is set up next to it. And as far as the relaxation area is concerned, the spa of the hotel has various types of skin care and massages to offer. Note that the brand used for the cosmetics is Elemis.
The 184 bedrooms are distributed over six floors and across various categories: 163 standard rooms (including 92 doubles and 71 twins), 5 superior ones and 16 suites including the famous presidential suite. The standard rooms are decorated in a rather classic way, in keeping with the African style. The dark wood furniture is in harmony with the thick carpet and the curtains on the windows. A work area is there for people who come with their work, alongside one of the walls, with a computer keyboard linked up to the TV set. The facilities available are: a TV set, air-conditioning, a stocked up mini-bar with tea and coffee making facilities, a direct line for international calls as well as room service available until 12 midnight.
There is little space in the bathroom, but all the same there is a bathtub and a large dark grey granite sink. Hospitality products are at your disposal as well as a hairdryer, mineral water and a magnifying mirror. As efficient as can be!
As everywhere else in the hotel, the decoration of the main restaurant, the Café Maghreb, consists of African handicraft artifacts and tapestries. The tables, embellished with fresh flowers, are set up on two levels and the buffet is set up in the middle of the room. It is possible to have your meals inside but also outside on the sheltered terrace. You now know that the restaurant serves buffets, but it also offers à la carte meals for people with small appetites. All your meals can be taken here, unless you choose to have lunch, or dinner, at the Mandhari Restaurant, located on the first floor. A pleasant place where you can eat to the sound of a piano, with a view of the swimming pool and of Nairobi's Central Park.
At the bar of the hotel, the Aksum Bar, you can watch a band play various types of music from all over the world every night. You can have your before or after-dinner drinks on the outdoor terrace or inside, under a ceiling full of of hanging umbrellas. As for the Bambara Lounge, it is only reserved for the hotel's guests. It is named after a tribe in Mali.
