Our pickBaros is a top quality, very comfortable and sophisticated hotel, offering a luxurious view from the bar and the restaurant overhanging the ocean, a feature that is hard to equal in the Maldives Islands. A fabulous decor.
This hotel review is a translation from the French published on our French site, Easyvoyage.com.
The Baros is located in the Malé Nord atoll, 20 min away by speed boat and 50 min away by dhoni from Malé. It offers a view of Banyan Tree and Angsana.
Children under 6 are not accepted. This hotel is intended more for couples. The Baros re-opened in December 2005 after eight months of renovation. The hotel belongs to the Universal Resorts chain. You can circumnavigate the island in 10 minutes. For honeymooners: special newlywed price and candlelit dinner with a bottle of wine offered by Kuoni. Underwater diving: The diving school gives lessons for all levels in English according to the PADI method. The coral reef is 98 feet away from the beach. 30 underwater diving sites are between a 5-minute and 1 hour trip. Night dives are also organized. The Baros underwater diving sites are famous for their turtles, manta rays and whale sharks.
The Baros hotel shines by its beauty. From the restaurant, the bar, the rooms, from everywhere, you see the turquoise blue water. It is very pleasant to vacation or honeymoon here. An idyllic landscape, with many infrastructures, several bars and restaurants, a fitness centre, a spa offering a whole range of massages, health and beauty treatments. The spa is made up of 4 bungalows dedicated to relaxation only. Within each bungalow, massage, Turkish baths, tasting of ginger ice tea, pressed fruits cocktail; outside is a jacuzzi. The soul of Baros is the tranquillity. Here, you can relax serenely. At aperitif time you can go to the Light House, the panoramic bar located on the first floor, that offers jazz concerts and wine and oyster tasting at about 7.00pm. The Light House is the only storied building on piers of Maldives. You can also enjoy its terrace. The Sails Bar will attract you particularly in the second part of the evening. Three times a week, a soft music group performs publicly. This is the main bar, covered with white sand on the ground, with a garden of palm trees in front. Your activities: flippers and snorkels are available in the fitness room. Two computers are accessible in the library. Baros also has an underwater diving centre and a water sports base. Dances are organized twice a week.
Baros contains 75 villas including 30 on piers and 24 Deluxe. Covered with wood flooring, all the rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a fan, a direct telephone line for international calling, a mini bar, safe. The standard rooms measure 956 square feet. They have armchairs, a desk, a table, all the necessary furniture to spend a comfortable stay. The room is decorated with net curtains, the bed is coated by a brown bedspread with a green branch and its leaves sewn on it, and the sheets are decorated with pillows. The bathroom has sliding wooden doors. The rooms have an inside bathroom with an outside shower, an inside shower and bathtub, and a hair dryer. The toilets are separated. There are beach towels in every villa. The rooms have a large television with satellite, a hi-fi system, water, coffee, an electric whistling kettle , slippers , kimonos, a terrace fitted out with deckchairs and elegant furniture. The terrace offers a sea view and is separated from the beach by bushes which allow vacationers to maintain their intimacy, shielded from onlookers. The Deluxe villas measure 1,107 square feet. They have the peculiarity of being equipped with bathrooms with a small garden and an outside shower, and a bathtub lined with stones. The villas on piers measure 1,021 square feet and have a terrace, without a view on the others, very private. The terraces are equipped with teakwood deckchairs with an outdoor canopy sofa. From the terrace, you have direct access to the room and likewise to the bathroom, where you will find a double hand-wash basin and a shower; the bathtub, with a headrest, is located in front of the picture window and offers a terrace and sea view. On the terrace, the staircase leads to the sea and is equipped with a small shower.
Three restaurants of international cuisine offer elegant dishes with French and South African wines chosen among the hotel's selection. The half-board and full-board packages are served at the main restaurant. For the other restaurants, you have to make a reservation. The Lime Restaurant, warm and decorated with wood, lined with picture windows, open towards the outside, offers a buffet for breakfast, an ŕ la carte lunch and a buffet or menu for dinner with Maldivian or Thai themes. Two menus are presented with 5 or 8 different courses. Each course comes with wine. The specialty of Baros is to blaze the course in wine in front of the client. We were able to visit the hotel at breakfast time. The buffet was very well presented. The pastries are home-made, the fruits freshly cut. The Lime Restaurant is very pleasant, thanks to its terrace overhanging the ocean. The Light House Restaurant, below the panoramic bar, also offers an incomparable view with its terrace. An elegant cuisine with Asian and Mediterranean influences, a selection of flavourful wines. You can also have dinner in the Cayenne Grill, which offers meat and fish, a varied choice of spices, for Maldivian or international cuisine. A buffet of antipasti and salads also complements the choice. The bread is made at Baros. There is a total of eight sorts of bread, all delicious. The Cayenne Grill is made up of two detached sand pavilions which allow you to dine in complete privacy. Candlelit dinners on the beach are possible.
Every villa is equipped with deckchairs. The sand is white but you may find some corals on the beach. You can observe small stones in the water. There is an underwater diving center and a water sports base. Here, only non-noisy sports like windsurfing or catamaran, or even canoeing. No water skiing... The beach is very quiet, the water is clear. There are deckchairs in each villa. On the west of the island, the difference in level is significant, this is thus an ideal place to practice water sports; on the rest of the island, corals close to the village facilitate snorkelling. The line of rocks on the sea in front of this part of the island obstructs the view a bit, in contrast to the other part where the view is unobstructed.
