CharmCozy and comfortable, the Palapas offers attractive architecture with its small wooden buildings and thatched roofs in the middle of the gardens. It is suitable for lovers of peace and tranquillity, near the bustling seaside resort of Playa del Carmen.
This hotel review is a translation from the French version published on our French site Easyvoyage.com.
The hotel is located 15 minutes by foot from the centre of Playa del Carmen, itself located 33 miles from the international airport of Cancun. It takes about an hour of transfer by shuttle.
Built in 1991 and renovated in 2005, the Palapas is a welcoming and comfortable facility with friendly architecture. It is composed of wooden buildings on two levels, and thatched roofs, which combine with vegetation, and it is pleasant to move around the gardens on its whereabouts in terracotta tiles.
At the entrance of the facility, a fitness centre offers a short walk to visitors curious about botany. The signs explain the species they encounter on their way. When climbing the watchtower, you can see lush vegetation surrounding the Palapas. To the right of the reception you will find the spa centre, the fitness room and the part dedicated to massages, all placed in the same building. At the end of the gardens there are the "club house", a restaurant bar with a pool table and a ping-pong table where guests have lunch, which leads to the pool, small and located at heights of the restaurant along the beach. Service is provided on the deck chairs made of wood and fabrics or on the hammocks. Rest and relaxation are guaranteed!
The hotel's 75 rooms (including 20 suites), located on the ground floor or upstairs of the buildings, provide a good size (215 ft²). Furnished in rattan with paintings and mirrors on the walls, they all have a refrigerator (provided upon request in advance from the reception), telephone with direct international dialling, individually adjustable air-conditioning (noisy however) coupled with a ceiling fan. Go to the TV lounge to watch television. The bathrooms are large, packed with a few personal skin care products, many towels and equipped with a shower and a hair dryer. The toilets are not separated. All have a terrace with a table, two chairs and a hammock. The suites, at the beachfront, are also equipped with sinks to rinse feet.
The main restaurant, located near the reception, prepares a large buffet topped with Mexican and international dishes in the morning and in the evening. The rattan tables are spaced enough and the quality of the food is more than correct. It is located in circles under a thatched roof and opens in the height over the gardens. For lunch, you can also try the "club house" near the swimming pool. Under a large roof of palapas and wooden beams, the tables of the restaurant-bar are nicely arrayed on beige tiles. Along with Mexican specialities, meat, soups, fish and varied entries are proposed. In addition, enjoy a small beach bar, dug directly into the sand on the beach.
In Playa del Carmen, the beach where the hotel is located enjoys a sufficient surface of sand, even after the passage of Wilma. The clear waters show a background of fine and white sand with some rocks which attract swimmers and beginner divers. The turquoise gradient of the Caribbean Sea conquers fans of water sports and aquatic activities. But the place is rather calm, away from the bustle of the restaurants and bars on the beach. Here and there palm trees and parasols with roofs of palm provide a shaded area.
