The Blau Porto Petro Beach is an upmarket resort which occupies an exceptional location on the former Club Med site. It sits astride two charming coves, just a stone's throw from the port of Porto Petro and the superb calanque of Cala Mandragore (a listed nature reserve), on the south-east coast of Majorca. You won't be disappointed by the high-calibre cuisine here either, and the complex also boasts a top-rate spa. In short, this is the perfect destination for families and sports enthusiasts.
The Blau Porto Petro Beach hotel is located 37 mi from Palma de Majorca and less than 2 mi from the seaside resort of Cala d'Or. It borders two charming coves along 2,953ft of coastline (surrounded by a pine forest) and is just a stone's throw from Porto Petro and close to the superb calanque of Cala Mandragore, a listed nature reserve on the south-east coast of Majorca. Palma airport is 31 mi away, meaning that the transfer time is around 45 minutes.
A member of the Mallorquin Blau Hotels and Resorts hotel chain, the Blau Porto Petro Beach, (listed as one of the Great Hotels of the World), now stands on the former Club Med site which traditionally enjoys the most desirable locations in a resort having been in the industry since the very birth of modern tourism. This complex really is extensive and there will certainly be a little walking to do (particularly if you want to visit the spa!), unless you manage to catch one of the electric carts that travels around the site. Although the hotel closes for the winter at the end of October, as do most of the hotels in Majorca, the season starts back up again in February (rather than Easter) thanks to the hotel's conference centre and its superb Ecologic Natural Spa with its large bay windows that let in plenty of light. This 12,300 sq ft well-being centre boasts an indoor heated swimming pool (4 and a half ft deep, disabled access) with hydromassage jets and in-pool seats, a sauna, a hammam, whirlpool baths, Vichy showers, seven sensation showers, a relaxation area and ten treatment and massage rooms (using products by the Parisian cosmetic brand La Sultana de Saba), not forgetting the hair and beauty salon, the yoga classes and the gym with ultra-modern equipment. Free Internet access is also available throughout the hotel (computer available in the lobby, Wi-Fi and ADSL connection in rooms). The conference centre auditorium can seat up to 284 people (the cast of the Moulin Rouge have even performed here), whilst the large Mondrago lounge can accommodate up to 550 delegates.
Opened in June 2005 and renovated in 2006 when its spa was built, the Blau Porto Petro Beach Resort and Spa has 309 rooms and 10 villas housed in ten small, one or two storey white buildings that blend in perfectly with the surrounding gardens in the hotel's 140 000 mē of grounds! Besides the indoor heated pool at the spa, guests have a choice between three additional pools, open from 10:00am to 7:00pm, which include a 60 mē children's pool and a solarium terrace complete with deckchairs and beige canvas parasols. Bath towels are provided on site free of charge. One of the pools, found along a snack bar, overlooks a creek and another, located next to the Spanish buffet restaurant, is 1m50 deep and in the shape of the figure 9. A relic of the former Club Med, the hotel also boasts a magnificent Roman-style amphitheatre which can accommodate up to 400 people for shows and concerts. For the more sporty ones among you, however, you might be interested in the fact that the hotel has a multi-sports field, a beach soccer pitch and no fewer than 10 tennis courts! Enough, you might say, to organize a Grand Slam tournament! The children's club is ideally located under the pine trees and is well-equipped and spacious. It welcomes children from 4 to 17 years of age. Who knows? They might even bump into BLAUDI, the hotel chain's mascot!
The accommodation is one of the hotel's best assets: the rooms are particularly spacious (377 sq ft), contemporarily decorated and tiled, with two modern art paintings adorning the walls. All have air-conditioning, an electronic safe (free of charge), a telephone, ADSL Internet access (free of charge), a mini-bar refrigerator (including a complimentary bottle of water), tea and coffee-making facilities, a CD player and radio-alarm and satellite television broadcasting 27 channels. The furniture in the room includes two single beds (you'll sleep like a log here!), a desk, a chair, a sofa-bed and a wooden coffee table, whilst out on the terrace, overlooking the beautiful cove below, you will find two armchairs and a round table. As for the bathrooms, which are decorated with flowers, they are light, spacious and sparkling clean. All include a bathtub with a handle and flexible showerhead, a washing-line, a professional hair-dryer, scales, bathrobes, slippers, a magnifying mirror, a toilet, a bidet, a telephone and numerous hospitality products, from cotton buds and tissues to candles, matches and even shoe polish! For even greater comfort, you may decide to go for one of the 453 sq ft junior suites, (of which the hotel has 48), which include a separate low-level lounge area, or one of the 51 (581 sq ft) suites with a king-sized bed and double washbasin. For a real treat, why not book one of the ten 1,076 sq ft villas, 6 of which have their own private pool, whilst the remaining 4 have to make do with a whirlpool bath on the patio!
Restauration is another of the hotel's strong points, with 4 restaurants, an outstanding location and unrivalled quality and variety. Take, for example, the main restaurant, Ran de Mar - tables next to the large bay windows are expensive, but the views across the sea and the cove below really are breath-taking! If you need to build up an appetite first, the show-cooking demonstrations will certainly get the juices flowing! The delicious buffet on offer consists of many local specialities such as gazpacho, paella, cheeses and cold meats, whilst the menu includes grilled fish and meat dishes, Mallorquin wine and tasty pastries, to name but a few. Breakfast is served from 7:30am to 10:30am and it really is excellent: there is a fine selection of omelettes made fresh before your very eyes, squeezed orange juice, Nespresso coffee, etc.,... what a way to start the day! Lunch is served from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and dinner from 7:00pm to 10:30pm. If you do get bored of the panoramic views, try the Finca, the Spanish buffet located near the swimming pool which only opens at lunchtime and which can accommodate 350 people alone, not to mention the terrace! In the evening, the Galani gourmet restaurant is open from 7:30pm to 10:30pm, for those who like to push the boat out. Here you'll have the choice of a variety of Mediterranean dishes prepared by a French chef and served a la carte, washed down, should you so wish, by one of the fine wines available. Note: a table on the terrace overlooking the sea is to be recommended! Finally, those who like exotic cuisine should head to the Midori Japanese restaurant (with Teppaniaki, a sushi bar and a Japanese chef), which is only open in the evening. Basically, the Blau Porto Petro Beach Resort caters for all palates! After dinner, why not enjoy a cigar in the trendy chill-out piano bar Estels, complete with its own DJ and a panoramic terrace overlooking the calanque below.
The Blau Porto Beach Resort and Spa has two beaches on its doorstep, and, more to the point, two beautiful coves, the first of which remains untouched whilst the second is equipped with deckchairs, parasols and a shower. Bathing is unsupervised here and there are no water sports clubs. A 5-minute train ride will take you to the famous Mandrago cove, a listed nature reserve.
