CharmThis is a small hotel in the city centre. Aptly named the City Hotel, it is a cosy place where you will feel at home. Families of three will appreciate the 3-bed rooms, with their simple comforts and pleasant decor.
The hotel is situated bang in the centre of Rovaniemi and it is surrounded by numerous shops, restaurants and supermarkets. It is only some 300ft away from the departure point of snowmobile safaris and about 5 mi from the Ounasvaara ski resort. The airport is 4 mi away.
The rooms only have a double bed in a few rare cases. Pets are welcome in the hotel at no extra charge!
You can even ask to have a text sent to you in the event of there being Northern Lights to see.
Only a few hotels manage to turn their reception area into a friendly place to hang around while waiting for room keys or meeting up with someone before or after a meal. It is also the place to come and have a snack and a cup of tea, there is even a little bar that offers tea and coffee-making facilities as well as delicious pastries that you can savour in one of the ultra-soft armchairs. The hotel's ground floor has a series of lounge areas comfortably furnished with cosy armchairs. There are also two computers on a table that are available for guests who wish to surf the Internet. The City Hotel is a four-floor classical building with colourful decor. On the top floor you will find a sauna, which is open to women and men, (women from 5:00pm till 7:00pm and men from 7:00pm till 9:00pm). In the basement, a lively bar is open every evening. There is a pool-table in a large, convivial area which is full of music and colours and the atmosphere is very relaxed. It is also a type of smokers' tank where you can enjoy a cigarette or a couple of puffs on a cigar without suffering from frostbite.
The rooms are small but cosy. They are a great place to get warm and enjoy a film on the television. They have a small desk on which you can work on your computer (Internet access) and a shower. Obviously, they are also good for sleeping in! They include a large dark wood wardrobe with shelves, a minibar, an ironing board (that pops out of a drawer!) and a mirror. In fact, the rooms are full of storage facilities, even inside and on top of the bedside table. There is absolutely no wasted space here. There is plenty of lighting to compensate for the dark winters and a big window to let the summer sun in. In the summer, very thick curtains will allow you to get some shut-eye during the very long days. As for the bathrooms, they are tiny and equipped with a shower, a small towel-warmer on top of the toilet and a washbasin. A hair-dryer, a shampoo and a soap dispenser allow guests to travel light.
The ground-floor restaurant, entirely decorated with wood and animal furs, offers a buffet breakfast and a la carte lunch and dinner. The menu proposes delicious fish soups, numerous freshwater fish, reindeer and other meat dishes. The food is good without being outstanding. On the downside, the service is rather slow and the wine glasses are more like half wine glasses.
