The hotel Fairmont is an upscale hotel situated in close proximity to the colonial district and Singapore river. It is in the heart of Raffle City, a large complex that houses conference centres and shopping malls, as well as Swissotel The Stamford. The Fairmont has direct access to the metro line, a host of restaurants and one of the biggest spas in Asia.
The hotel is located at 80 Bras Basah Road, a short distance from the colonial district and Singapore river, in front of the famous Raffles hotel and Swissotel The Stamford. The City Hall tube station is directly underneath the hotel, in the vicinity of the shopping mall. Changi's international airport is some 17 mi away. Traffic allowing, you should expect a 25 minute cab ride to get you there ($25) or three-quarters of an hour if you choose to take the tube ($3).
The Fairmont houses the Willow Stream Spa, which, with its 35 treatment rooms and massage parlours is the Singapore's largest spa centre, and one of the biggest in Asia! However, the wireless and ADSL Internet access is quite expensive here so we recommend that you go and have a coffee at the next-door Starbuck's where you can surf the Internet for free. Be aware that guests of the Fairmont, which is part of the Canadian Fairmont Hotels and Resorts group, can also enjoy access to the facilities provided by the neighbouring Swissotel and Raffles hotels. There are no fewer than 1,000 boutiques and 300 restaurants in the huge shopping malls of Raffle City and on the 70th floor of the Swissotel, the Equinoxe bar offers a breathtaking view of Singapore's Formula 1 racing track and its night races held during the month of September. The rest of the year you can enjoy the view of Saint Andrew's Cathedral, the supreme court and its dome, the Victoria Theatre and concert hall, the skyscrapers of the financial area, the Singapore Fly (the biggest ferris wheel in the world) and the harbour. You can even see Indonesia and Malaysia in the distance!
The Fairmont occupies two rather charmless skyscrapers that were built in 1987. Since December 2007, the Fairmont has totalled 769 rooms which are distributed across these buildings known as the North Tower (which has the most recent rooms) and the South tower. The hotel is open all year round and undergoes refurbishment work on a yearly basis. It houses the Willow Stream Spa, which is the largest centre of its kind in Singapore and one of the biggest in Asia, with 35 treatment and massage parlours! If you fancy it, you can take a refreshing dip in one of the hotel's two round swimming-pools; they are on the 8th floor and are 3.6 and 5.4 ft deep respectively. There is also a swimming-pool bar which serves a variety of cocktails from 8:30am till 11:00pm and a nearby solarium area with wooden deckchairs (and mats), parasols and showers. Sports enthusiasts will be delighted by the huge fitness centre and its state-of-the-art facilities. It is open from 5:30am until 11:00pm and can accommodate up to 60 guests. Furthermore, the hotel has 6 tennis courts.
With wall-to-wall carpets and high ceilings, the Fairmont's rooms are spacious (390 sq ft) and modern. They have two queen-size beds, a glass-top desk, an armchair, a satellite television with a big flat screen (25 channels) a free electronic safe that is big enough to hold a laptop, air-conditioning, a telephone, a mini-bar fridge, a kettle with tea and coffee-making facilities, an iron and ironing board, ADSL Internet access ($28 per day) and a flashlight. Also note that everything, from the lights and curtains to the air-conditioning, is remote controlled! All rooms have a small balcony with a view of the solarium area and the two swimming-pools. The marble bathroom includes a bathtub with a flexible shower, elaborate hospitality products, tissues, a hair-dryer, dressing-gowns and slippers, a shaving kit and toothbrush kit, a magnifying mirror, scales, a clothes-line and a toilet. The Deluxe rooms have a separate shower with a tropical shower head, parquet flooring and a desinger washbasin.
With the next-door Swissotel The Stamford, you have access to no less than 12 restaurants! You can have your breakfast in a different setting every day; at the Café Suisse, the Plaza Market Café, the Copy Taen, the Prego, or the poolside terrace of the Alligator pear. The food is always varied and of good quality; you are bound to find what you are looking for, be it homemade hot chocolate, fresh fruit juices (papaya, guava, orange), steam-cooked raviolis, waffles, pancakes, omelettes, or Asian specialities! For lunch and dinner, why not try out the various dishes on offer, with Japanese, French, Chinese or Italian cuisine... The Café Suisse offers a buffet option between noon and 2:30pm, but if you want to enjoy a breathtaking view of Singapore sprawling at your feet, go to the Equinoxe bar on the 70th floor. The bar can accommodate up to 150 guests and offers high tea from 3:30pm until 5:30pm and international cuisine from 6:30pm until 10:30pm. Very few restaurants can boast a view over an entire country, at a distance you can even see as far as Malaysia and Indonesia! There is a stairway that leads up to the top of the skyscraper where you will find the New Asia disco bar which is open from 7:30pm until 2:00am. There is also a small room where you can enjoy a cigar. However, if it's fine French foods that you're looking for, you should look no further than the gourmet a la carte restaurant Jaan. However, you will need to book in advance if you want to find a seat in this small establishment that can welcome a maximum of 22 people.
