Lake Balaton The largest lake in Europe, it is also called the Sea of Hungary due to its size. Richard Semik/ age fotostock
62 miles west of Budapest, Balaton Lake is every Hungarian's favourite holiday destination. With 159 miles of coastline (and a surface area of 229 sq mi), the banks of the lake boast spas, beaches (in the south), cliffs (in the north) and wonderful villages like Balatonfüred, Tihany and Keszthely. Balaton is the biggest lake in Central Europe, it enjoys an exceptional microclimate and the water temperature can reach up to 26 °C in the summer; qualities which explain the record number of tourist visits when the weather is nice. The only major negative point is the hotel infrastructure, which is often of extremely bad taste on the south bank.
