Although the country joined the European Union on the 1 May 2004, the conversion to the Euro will not take place until late in 2009. The currency remains the Hungarian Forint (HUF). ?1 = 246 Hungarian Forints, and Ł1 = 355 Hungarian Forints.
The euro cheques and bank cheques to be converted into the home currency are accepted at the majority of exchange points (but also at the post offices for the euro cheques and the American Express traveller's cheques). International credit cards (Visa, Visa Electron, Eurocard, Master Card and Maestro) are widely accepted. The American Express card only allows you to take out money from American Express cash machines (Budapest and the airport). The banks are open from Monday to Thursday, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and on Friday, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. They are closed on the weekends.

Bus: The 108 bus line of the S.A. Volanbusz company links up the major cities in the province and the village-based bus stations. In the west, they leave from the station on Erzsébet Square (Budapest, Ve. Tél. : 317 2318) everyday from 6 :00 am to 9 :00 pm. In the east, they leave from Népstadion station ut (Budapest, XIVe Tél. : 252 4496), everyday from 5:30 am to 9 :00 pm. Towards the Danube bend, they leave from the station on Arpad bridge from Monday to Friday from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm and from Saturday to Sunday from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
Train: Other than the 47 international trains which regularly provide services to 13 European capitals, travellers can visit the country on the "InterCity" and "InterPici" trains which circulate around the different tourist regions, including Balaton lake. There are not only direct links between the major cities and the 19 administrative centres of the county, but also narrow-gauge trains which circulate over 236 miles towards the most beautiful regions in the country (tel. : 461 5400,day and night). There are also the ?nostalgic trains? which circulate between May and August (nostalgia-train@mail.matav.hu). A subscription for the week costs 13,410 ¨Hungarian Forints (Ł41) for 1st class and 8,900 forints (Ł27) for 2nd class. A 10 day subscription costs 19,320 (Ł59) Hungarian Forints for 1st class and 12,800 (Ł39) Hungarian Forints for 2nd class.
Car: The car is an excellent means of transport for visiting the country. It is possible to rent a car from numerous companies (Air Luck. Tel.: 355 9692; Americana Rent a Car. Tel.: 296 6988). 18,640 miles of road give access to all the towns (the motorways are signalled by the letter M and the international roads by the letter E). In Hungary you drive on the right and the British driving license is valuable for one year including the date of entry into the country.
Taxi : Generally, the prices during the day are 200 Hungarian Forints (60p) as it's 125 Hungarian Forints/mile. The prices in the evening are 160 Hungarian Forints for 160 Forints/mile.

No particular vaccine is required, however, it is recommended that you are vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis as some cases have been reported in Central Europe.

It is recommended that you subscribe to medical repatriation insurance before departure. Hungary disposes of good medical structures and the use of blood and blood preparation for medical purposes are very strictly controlled.
